Rock Climbing Anchor Building & Gear
If you want to climb safely and efficiently outdoors, you'll need to know how to build a variety of different rock climbing anchors and you'll need to know the right gear to make it happen!





This course is geared toward building rock climbing anchors and the gear you will need in order to do so!
This course will teach you the most efficient and appropriate techniques given the type of gear you have and where you'd like to build your anchor. We will cover the following:
- Traditional Anchors
- Sport Anchors
- Tree/Rock Anchors (Natural)
- Gear placement
Max client to guide ratio is 6:1
Requisite Experience
It is recommended that you can create the following knots prior to the course:
- Overhand on a bight
- Figure 8 on a bight
- Figure 8 follow through
- Clove hitch
- Double Fisherman

- Helmet, UIAA/CE approved for climbing, Petzl Scirocco
- Harness with belay loop, UIAA/CE approved for climbing, Petzl Hirundos

- Approach Shoes (optional, bring if you have them)
- Nut Tool, for removing nuts/stoppers (optional)
- Non-locking Carabiners, 5 carabiners
- Locking Carabiners, 5 carabiners
- Belay Device, Tube style belay device, Petzl Reverso, BD ATC Guide
- Assisted Braking Device, ABD style belay device, Petzl “GriGri” (Optional)
- 1 Prusik loop, fixed 4’ loop of 6mm nylon cord or purpose built loop like Sterling “Hollow Block”
- 1 Cordelette, 20’, 7mm nylon cord or 5.9mm Sterling PowerCord
- Double Length Sewn Runner, Black Diamond 18mm Nylon Runners 120cm
Rope, Rack, and Draws (Optional - If you already have these, please feel free to bring, otherwise they will be provided by your guide)
- Rope, One 60-70m "single" dynamic rope
- Rack, A lead climbing rack (Cams, stoppers/nuts, tri-cams, etc.)
- Draws, A set of 10-12 standard or alpine draws
