What 3D Mapping App Can Replace FATMAP?

FATMAP, a go-to 3D mapping app for backcountry skiers and alpine climbers, is done.  Despite a loyal following with a massive set of user generated content, FATMAP made it's last renders on October 1, 2024. The app was purchased by Strava in early 2023 and continued to operate for over a year until being shuttered by its parent company this year.

FATMAP allowed users to view terrain in 3D, record their adventures and share data with others.  It was known for it's high-quality satellite imagery, with images for both summer and winter that provided skiers and climbers with the ability to preview terrain with realistic renderings on smartphones and desktops computers.  Originally it seemed that Strava would incorporate FATMAP's unique feature set and library of user data that FATMAP had been compiling for a decade. Unfortunately, when October rolled around, Strava shuttered FATMAP without providing a similar product to replace FATMAP's functionality or user generated content.

With FATMAP shuttered, backcountry skiers, splitboarders, climbers and other adventurers are now looking for another app that can replace FATMAP.  This is a hard void to fill for FATMAP's fanbase, but there are a number of contenders with incredible options for 3D Mapping for the backcountry. In this blog, we’ll lay out the best mobile phone (and desktop) apps to replace FATMAP, with features, pricing and comments on the user interfaces of each.
