Mount Shasta Seasonal Weather History
Many people wrote off the ski season early in the Sierra due to a late start, but this season has actually been a year to remember for both snowpack and ski quality! The seasonal weather history doesn't lie, this season on Mt Shasta is shaping up to be the best in years thanks to lots of snowfall, high water content (SWE) and lower winds than past years. What this combination means is that it's a great year to ski Mount Shasta!
With snow plastering Mount Shasta from trailhead to summit, the mountain is primed for a banner ski mountaineering and alpine climbing season. Comparing the snow depths on the upper mountain between this year and last year's "historic, massive season" is shocking: there is much more snow on the West Face and the Red Banks this year than there was last season. The reason for this is warmer snow and less wind allowed the snow to stick! Despite having a huge winter last year, the West Face was surprisingly bare by the 3rd week of May last year.
This year, the mountain is stuffed and the West Face has weeks and weeks of snowpack coverage left. The bottom line is that if you want to climb or ski Mount Shasta, this is the year to do it!
