Each day we explore a new zone, from steep lines above Siglufjörður to mellow bowls and iconic peaks like The Great Pyramid. You will ski under the midnight sun, soak in natural hot springs, and take in the charm of northern Iceland’s fishing villages. Choose from premium lodging at the Sigló Hotel, Hotel Siglunes, or cozy ski in ski out Airbnbs with front door access to the mountains. This trip is designed for strong intermediate to expert backcountry skiers who want to experience Iceland’s unique terrain and culture in a small group setting.

Here is the schedule for our Iceland Troll Peninsula Backcountry Skiing Adventure:

  • Day 1 – Arrive in the Troll Peninsula – Meet the team at Akureyri Airport (AEY) and travel north to Siglufjörður. Settle in, review the plan for the week, and enjoy an optional sunset tour or beach hot tub session overlooking the Arctic Ocean.
  • Day 2 – Tunnel Town – Start strong with 2,000 to 2,500 foot runs between Sigló and Ólafsfjörður. Expect consistent 30 to 40 degree slopes and panoramic fjord views.
  • Day 3 – The Old Road or Karlsa Peak – Choose between steep couloirs above the old ski area or mellow, scenic lines on Karlsa Peak. We match terrain to the group and the conditions.
  • Day 4 – The Great Pyramid – A classic of the Troll Peninsula. Skin past frozen waterfalls, boot to the summit, and enjoy several descent options with stunning views.
  • Day 5 – Gold Coast and GeoSea – Explore new terrain on the Gold Coast with playful slopes and big ocean views. Optional soak at the GeoSea cliffside hot springs in the evening.
  • Day 6 – Midnight Sun Tour – Take advantage of Iceland’s long spring evenings with a golden hour climb and a silky corn descent back toward the ocean.
  • Day 7 – Final Tour and Departure – Wrap up with an optional relaxed morning tour, then make the scenic drive back to Akureyri for flights or onward travel.

Here are the skills and fitness you'll need for your trip:

  • Advanced to Expert Backcountry Skiing Skills – You should be confident skiing off-piste terrain in variable snow, including firm spring conditions and steep descents up to 40°. This trip involves technical terrain like couloirs and bowls with sustained pitches.

  • Intermediate Touring Experience – You should be comfortable with skinning, transitions, route-finding, and have at least 15–20 days of backcountry experience. Familiarity with basic avalanche protocols is expected; AIARE 1 or equivalent training recommended.

  • Strong Fitness – Capable of climbing 2,500–4,000 vertical feet per day and maintaining a pace of ~1,000’ per hour. You should be able to move for multiple hours between breaks. Most participants train or exercise 3–4 days per week.

  • Step 2: If you paid a deposit, pay the remaining trip balance by check, Zelle, or credit card (with fees). We’ll send payment instructions after your order confirmation. Final payment is due 90 days before the trip start date.

For this trip, you'll need a full backcountry ski setup, avalanche safety gear, and clothing suitable for variable spring conditions in coastal Iceland.

  • Ski/Split and Boot crampons for firm or icy conditions
  • Avalanche safety gear: beacon, shovel, probe
  • Backpack (30–40L) with helmet carry and avalanche gear storage
  • Helmet and goggles
  • Technical outerwear: waterproof shell, midlayers, and gloves
  • Headlamp with fresh batteries
